from technology news:The start of 2006 will be delayed on Saturday night by a full second. A leap second is added to take account of the Earth's rotational time, which can speed up or slow down because of many factors, including ocean tides. Leap seconds can create problems for computer programmers. Without them, however, astronomers would lose track of distant stars and spacecraft.
