They might tease you or ask you questions, they might even, in elementary school, be your soccer coach, but their attention always felt momentary, before they turned back to the real business at hand. . . Another person's father could grill your hamburger, could pump air into your bike tire, could carry your suitcase out to the car, but what could you possibly do for him?"
